As far back as I can remember I have always had a burning desire to be great at something. I have wanted to live a life of significance, be unique, make a difference, inspire others, be a leader, and create a lifestyle that most people would never dream were possible; in short, a lifestyle of complete and limitless freedom.
What I wanted was completely ridiculous, absolutely unrealistic by society’s standards, and contrary to what most of our parents teach us! Everyone knows you can’t have everything. It is impossible to have the body of your dreams, eat like a king, create wealth, have time-freedom, have to answer to no one in your work environment, travel as much as you would like, spend time daily on personal development, hire coaches to develop your hobbies, put family first, continually develop new friendships, and marry a beautiful and amazing spouse.
That is exactly what I wanted, and I almost killed myself with stress looking for the perfect vehicle that could give me the life of my dreams. In 2009, I finally gave up on my dreams and decided that I was done sacrificing my health. I was tired of the rat race. All the stress was not worth it anymore.
Let me give you a recap of some of the life events that led me to finally throw in the towel. But before I do, let me make something clear; I understand that everyone has personal struggles, obstacles, and road blocks. I also know that I am extremely fortunate to have only faced minor obstacles compared to what some of you may be going through. However, my hope is that something I share with you grabs your attention and you understand that I may have felt the same way you are feeling now.
I spent the majority of my childhood and young adult life sick! I was born six weeks premature and had chronic health issues from birth to age 24. Fortunately, it was nothing too serious, but I suffered horrible allergies, asthma, chronic sinus and lung infections (I have had pneumonia 9 times!), chronic joint pain, and finally, at age 24, I was diagnosed with a severe autoimmune inflammatory condition. Essentially, my condition had put my endocrine system in shock and left me partially disabled.
At 24, I embarked on a mission to become healthy. I proceeded to spend thousands of dollars and saw 27 different doctors around the country. Unfortunately, the best of the best in the traditional medical community offered no help, no answers, identified no causes, and found no solutions.
I was told by one physician to go on disability, rest and accept the fact that I was going to be chronically ill for the rest of my life and not be able to work or live a normal life. Fortunately, I never gave up and I didn’t accept the medical professional’s opinion, which so many people (wrongly) take as gospel!
I was very sick, completely depressed, and absolutely without hope. One day my mom came to me with the business card of a woman who was a natural wellness practitioner. I had absolutely nothing to lose, so I went to meet with her and she literally changed my life within six weeks.
It turns out that my entire life of chronic illness and inflammation was being caused by gluten, processed grains, simple sugars, and a few more “healthy” foods that I developed severe sensitivities to. How could this be? I asked many of the 27 physicians if I could possibly have food allergies. They completely dismissed the notion after looking at some basic preliminary blood work that turned out to be completely inaccurate. To make matters worse, many of these same doctors told me that I had mental issues and should be evaluated, i.e., that I had become a hypochondriac – that I was making myself sick, and if you can believe this, that I actually wanted to be sick.
As I started to get well I became absolutely obsessed with nutrition, supplementation, and overall natural wellness practices. I bought every book I could find, followed every wellness blog I came across, and started going to seminars. I felt betrayed by our medical system and I was determined to help as many people in the world not have to go through the pain and suffering and waste the time and money that I had.
In 2008, I came across the best wellness blog there was: Underground Wellness. I eventually became a client and friend of the Underground Wellness founder, Sean Croxton. Sean helped me realize further breakthroughs and I enjoyed tremendous progress with my health, but neither one of us had any idea how we would later stumble upon a life-changing opportunity.
In 2009, I started my nutrition and performance consulting business which allowed me to share my personal experiences and knowledge with individuals around the country. My passion for wellness and burning desire to help people were key ingredients that helped me grow my business quickly and have the opportunity to work with NBA, NFL, Olympic, and CrossFit athletes around the country. I also spent a large portion of my time with “sick” people who were having unexplained health issues, inflammation, and auto-immune related issues.
I loved my work and truly believed I had finally found my purpose in life! However, my entrepreneurial side started to become frustrated with the fact that there was only one of me and so little time to make my business scalable and grow.
Ironically, all the struggles that led me to temporarily throw in the towel are what shaped me and led me to the vehicle that would ultimately change my life. It is a vehicle that allows me to use my passion for helping others, promoting wellness, creating wealth, personal development, and teaching. It is called Network Marketing. Unfortunately, it is an industry with a clouded past and its unconventional approach has been known to provoke fear in some people who are unaware of the facts. The most fearful and misinformed even call the business model a “scam” or a “pyramid scheme.”
At the end of 2010, I received a phone call from Sean Croxton. He introduced me to a company called LifeVantage and showed me a product and business opportunity that changed both of our lives forever. This was my absolute first taste of Network Marketing. I was an amateur and didn’t know what I was doing, but I loved the product and I knew I had found something that brought a new excitement and purpose to my life.
After messing around for six months, testing the water, and throwing sporadic effort at it, I decided I wanted to dive in and learn how to be a professional Network Marketer. I started following LifeVantage’s system. I lined up three-way conference calls on a daily basis, and I made time to learn something new every single day. Before I knew it I was presenting live “opportunity meetings” and training my team, and soon, my side-business was producing real income – the type of income most people would love to make from their real job!
The purpose of the Shanahan Plan blog is to share with you the valuable lessons I have learned in my transition to Network Marketing and to help you drastically accelerate your learning curve. Network Marketing is the vehicle that changed my life. It has given me a greater purpose, time-freedom, and financial freedom.
I want to help you develop a successful Network Marketing business. I want you to understand and experience firsthand that it is a powerful tool that can change your life, too.
As you can see, my strong passion for self improvement, wellness, and athletic performance was magnified by my own personal health struggles, propelling me on a desperate search to find true wellness. On my journey to wellness, I met my friend, mentor, and business partner, Sean Croxton. In hindsight, all of my past entrepreneurial ventures and my passion for wellness led me to take a look and quickly say yes to Sean and my first Network Marking venture.
I truly believe that Network Marketing is the perfect vehicle for anyone to create wealth, find greater purpose, and live a life of limitless freedom.
